DeskTap 1.0.0 Known Limitations

For purchase-policy routing, Version 1.1 applies when the transaction completed at or after the recorded Version 1.1 activation time and the order stores desktap_eula_v1_1_acceptance = true, regardless of Checkout Session creation time. Purchases completed earlier, or with missing or ambiguous assent, retain Version 1.0 or the term more favorable to the customer.

DeskTap detects physical vibration through a supported MacBook’s built-in motion sensor. Detection depends on the Mac, macOS version, desk, placement, calibration, tapping method, audio configuration and nearby vibration.

Check compatibility before purchase

DeskTap requires a MacBook with an M1 Pro chip or newer running macOS 14.6 or later. Use the built-in speakers at 48 kHz with a 256- or 512-sample buffer. Bluetooth output, external audio interfaces, 44.1 or 96 kHz and a 128-sample buffer are not supported in this release.

The recorded hands-on configuration is MacBook Pro (M1 Pro) on macOS 26.5.2. Other combinations in the declared range have not all received an individual hands-on test. Use the three-day trial on your exact Mac before purchase. Wired headphones may work, but their latency has not been measured.

Sensor failed, not found, stalled or a similar DeskTap message means that DeskTap could not use the motion stream at that time. The message alone does not identify the cause and is not evidence by itself of a hardware or motion-sensor fault. Possible causes include sensor access or ownership, driver or operating- system behavior, another DeskTap instance, or hardware. Use Retry sensor, relaunch and the Support steps before drawing a conclusion.

Detection varies with the setup

• Typing, trackpad use, moving objects, cable knocks, speaker vibration and nearby movement can trigger a sound because DeskTap detects vibration, not intention.
• Moving the MacBook or changing the desk or placement requires recalibration.
• A tap much stronger than the range used during calibration can cause an extra delayed trigger. Recalibrate at your normal range or lower Sensitivity.
• Very weak taps, closely spaced taps and some flams can be missed. Adjust Sensitivity or recalibrate for the way you normally play.
• Action-to-sound latency has not been measured as a release claim.

Current product boundaries

• DeskTap plays each detected tap at the output level you set; it does not vary sample volume from strike strength.
• DeskTap is a standalone sound application. It does not output MIDI and is not a VST or MIDI controller.
• The trial includes all nine built-in packs, with up to 100 actually audible outputs per pack. Custom sample loading requires activation.
• One Mac can be active at a time. A successful Polar validation allows up to 72 hours of offline use.
• Removing or resetting DeskTap’s macOS Keychain records can affect trial and licence state.

Use controlled taps

During calibration, use controlled taps that represent your normal range. “Firm” means the upper end of that range—not excessive force. During general use, stay within a similar controlled range. When tapping the MacBook directly, use only a light, controlled tap with a bare fingertip. Never use a fist, knuckle, tool, hard object, or thrown or dropped object. Stop if the MacBook moves, slides, flexes, overheats, makes an abnormal sound or behaves unexpectedly.
